Tactics in football

Attacking tactics - subs can be used as an attacking tactic in many ways, from the time the player
is brought on, to the position the player plays on the pitch. The idea of an attacking sub is to bring
more life and a better chance of changing the game for a better result that what the score was before
the substitution. This usage of an attacking sub can be either to add fresh legs to the attack in a like
for like manner i.e. swapping a fast winger for another fast winger, this is to keep the same tempo
throughout the attack. Or the substitution can be used to allow a more unorthodox change i.e. a tall
hold up striker can be subbed for a quick striker to allow a different style of play to be played to give a
better chance of changing the tempo for the benefit of the game to get the result you want.

Defensive Tactics - The offside trap is a defensive tactic as its aim is to play a high line and push
up just before the ball is played to catch the attacking players offside. This is performed by the
defensive team all pushing up in a group just before the ball is kicked so all the attacking players
are offside, this relieves the pressure on the defensive team allowing them to regroup after being
under pressure from the attacking side.

Set Plays - The different runs that are made off a corner are used to give an advantage to the attacking team by giving them a better chance with connecting with the corner and scoring from the attacking opportunity. The different runs consist of front post, back post and central runs, this allows the attacking team to get away from the defensive markers and make their moves towards the ball. Set plays are a very good opportunity to score from as it allows players with height to use it to there advantage.

Team Formations
Team Formations have an impact on how the team is set up throughout the game. There are many
different formations that can be used to emphasize what style of football the team wants to play. For
example a 5-3-2 formation is used when you want to defend as you have 5 defenders
and 3 midfielders that can be used in a holding role. This formation can be used when you either
holding out for a win or can be used to soak up the opponents pressure and hit them on the counter
with the two strikers up top. Where as the 3-4-3 formation is used as an attacking formation this is
because you only have three defenders meaning you have more bodies in attack this allows the the
wingers to constantly overlap each other creating opportunities for the ball to be put in the box for the
striker to finish. The only problem about this formation is because it only has three defenders it’s
prone to counter attacks.

Communication
Communication in football is vital as since it’s a team sport you need to be able to talk to everyone on
your team. Communication is needed throughout the game for example in attack and defense.
Communication in defense allows the defenders to tell each other who is marking who, this allows
the other defenders to defend positions throughout the pitch knowing that the striker is being marked
by their fellow counterparts. Where as in attack communication is key because it allows the striker to
talk and know where both of them are on the pitch and it also allows them to make different runs
because then they know that they aren’t going to run into the same position on the pitch.

Movement
Movement in football is key because it allows players to move into positions where they can receive
the ball. Movement allows space to be created and gaps to be left in the opponents defense allowing
the attacking team to counter on their mistakes. Movement is also key in defensive areas as it allows
the defense to keep tight to the strikers allowing the defenders to soak up the pressure from the
attack allowing them to clear the ball without any problem.
