Marking in Football
Marking in football is used as a defensive strategy throughout the game and can be used in two ways,
either zonal marking or man marking. Both do the job of marking but they do it in a completely
different way. Zonal marking is where you mark a defensive zone of the pitch rather than man to
man marking, this is mostly done throughout the game and can be performed at anytime in the
game. Zonal marking can cover multiple players at once if they’re in the same area, but it can also
go wrong if someone doesn’t do there job right. To perform zonal marking you need to be given a
zone to mark, when the ball enters that zone you need to attack the ball and win it back, you
shouldn’t leave the area that you’re defending even if the ball is close to you but not in your area,
this is because it will leave gaps open that can be exploited by the opposite team. Man marking is
different as it states in the name, instead of marking a zone like zonal marking you need to mark a
opponent. This needs to be done by being touch tight to your opponent, this is done by not letting the
person you’re marking being able to gain space and receive the ball off their teammates and if they do
receive the ball you’re in the correct place to win the ball back of them and clear the danger.
